19 November 2016 - Chapter Meeting, Sabbar Shrine Temple, Tucson

Members and guests met with difficult driving conditions due to the annual "El Tour de Tucson" to attend the November 19th, 2016 Tucson Chapter meeting at the Sabbar Shrine Temple on Tucson Boulevard.  Those that made it were rewarded by the featured speaker, Tucson Police Officer Charley Foley, who is an advocate of proper respect and use of the American Flag and he, together with fellow Police Officer Brandley Clark, have dedicated themselves to rehabilitating and flying American Flags on unused flag poles around the Tucson Metropolitan area.  Their effort in this area has been extremely successful! Donations may be made at their web site, flags4flagless.org, to support this great enterprise.  Elsewhere, the Chapter took great delight inducting Paul Fitch, into the SAR.  Doing the induction ceremony was Chapter President John Niemeyer with Dr. Rudy Byrd doing the honor of pinning the SAR Rosette on Compatriot Fitch's lapel.  Mrs. Nancy Alter requested that members consider supporting Cilla Tomme's (PG Tomme's wife) "Shoes for School" charity project.  This project would put good quality shoes on Louisville area children that cannot afford shoes.  Later, Compatriot Rick Collins discussed the proposal to change our Chapter meeting venue from the Sabbar Shrine Temple to Morgan McDermott Post #7, 330 West Franklin.  There will be more on that later.

22 October 2016 - Chapter Meeting, Sabbar Shrine Temple, Tucson

The second Tucson Chapter meeting after the Summer hiatus featured George Washington (Steve Monez) speaking to the Chapter about his military campaigns and adventures.  The presentation was informative and well received by members and guests.   Elsewhere on the October 22nd agenda had Don Laidlaw, Terry Linthicum and Gene Taylor receiving new membership certificates and Jim Williamson and Bob Vint (the elder) receiving the Bronze Roger Sherman Medal and Certificate.  The Chapter extends a warm welcome and congratulations to our newest members as well as congratulations to the recipients of the Bronze Roger Sherman Medal.   Helping to support our ROTC/JROC, the Tucson Chapter conducts a 50/50 raffle.  The lucky winner of fifty dollars is David Milan.  Not too shabby!   Before closing the meeting, Dr. Byrd gave Compatriot Monez a Challenge Coin for his great presentation.  It should be noted that Compatriots Monez and Ed Steinback traveled all the way from Prescott to be with us this day. Thank you, gentlemen!

16 May 2015 - Chapter Meeting, Old Pueblo Grill, Tucson

The Tucson Chapter held it's final board and breakfast meeting before the summer break on May 16th , 2015 at the Old Pueblo Grill. The Flowing Wells JROTC Color Guard open up the meeting by presenting and posting the colors. The speaker for the morning was Major Robert L. DeWitt, retired. Major DeWitt talked about his past and his experiences with the JROTC program and the Flowing Wells High School program in particular. After his talk, Major DeWitt was given a Certificate of Appreciation by President Gerry Lawford. Also honored at the luncheon were Sahuarita HS JROTC Essay Winner Madeline Arbogast. Cadet Arbogast read her essay and was presented with a $100.00 check and a Chapter Level "Outstanding Cadet Certificate." Other awards given at the luncheon were: Bronze Good Citizenship Medal to Commander Brad Roberson and Ten Year Membership Certificate to Robert W. Vint (sometimes called "the younger".) Not one but two Certificates of Appreciation were given to John Patla plus a tie. John has been serving the Color Guard diligently as a drummer for various functions although he personally has not been able to qualify as a SAR. It's our hope that we may be able to correct that situation in the near future. Not present but given the Roger Sherman Medal Awards were: James Kimbrough, Col. William T. Lincoln, George Lipphardt and Joseph McGowan. Col. Lincoln also received a 30 Year Membership Certificate. As an aside, Al Niemeyer was given the miniature "tin cup" and cigar award by Color Guard Commander Rick Collins for his diligent attendance at various Color Guard functions during the past few weeks. Commander Collins then poured a shot of the "hard" stuff into the cup which was gleefully consumed by Compatriot Niemeyer. The cigar was later smoked on the Niemeyer patio. It is hereby noted that our Country is still in search of a good five cent cigar. Lest it should be forgotten, Tucson Chapter President Gerard Lawford was honored for his five years as a SAR member.
